Summer Reading 2020: Recommendations

It’s that time of year again when every magazine, newspaper and newsletter offers suggestions on summer reading. So why should this blog be any different?

Summer is the perfect time to spend some time vacationing or just relaxing. Sit in the sun, lie on a chaise poolside, rest by the ocean or a lake, or under the shade of a tree, sip a cool drink, and read a book—hard cover, soft cover, audio or digital.

Mysteries remain one of the most popular genres for summer reading. Why? Because they entertain us. They also engage our intellect in a satisfying manner. Romances provide us with a happy ever after ending. If you like reading for enjoyment, it’s the way to go.

Lots of good summer reading on the bestseller list.
But what about some of the excellent authors who write for small independent presses and provide us with quality fiction but don’t get as much publicity because they are not with the big publishers?

For adult readers, I suggest my mystery novel
Death Promise, a romantic mystery thriller published by Encircle and available on Amazon and other booksellers in both print and ebook editions. Also from Encircle is my latest novel, Blood Family, my 5th Kim Reynolds mystery.

For readers of young adult fiction I suggest WITCH WISH from Black Opal Press, also available from most booksellers.
Intrigue Publishing is offering my adult romantic mystery THE INHERITANCE as a free read on Audible.

If you enjoy historical romance, I suggest SINFUL SEDUCTION from Luminosity, set during the American Revolution.

There are many fine writers who should be added to this list. As a reader and/or writer are there any authors and/or books you would like to recommend for summer reading? You are most welcome to mention your own books as well.

  1. Right now I have a pile of books to read, and I'm also deep into my project of reading around the world--a novel by a woman from every country. I'm also reading a lot of short fiction as well as nonfiction. For a light summer read, may I suggest the seventh book in the Mellingham series? In Come About for Murder, Chief Silva's stepson, Philip, takes center stage when Joe teaches him to sail while the town is gearing up for an important visitor. It's a perfect summer read.

  2. Out this spring is number 7 in the Eve Appel mysteries, Nearly Departed. Eve and her motley crew of supporters solve yet another crime in the swamps of FL. A little romance and a lot of suspense.

  3. Reading BLOOD FAMILY now. 100 pages in -- so far, so good.

  4. BLOOD FAMILY is getting closer to the top of my TBR pile (electronic). Cindy Sample's books are great summer reads that make me smile while a mystery is solved. My first, Mustard's Last Stand, can also provide a laugh out loud adventure. And who doesn't need a laugh these days?

    1. Kathy,

I think mysteries with humor are the very best kind of books. You and Cindy both write very well.

  5. I'm always reading a book. If anyone is looking for a brilliant mystery, you'll enjoy Anthony Horowitz's "The Magpie Murders." Rhys Bowen's "In Farleigh Field" is a terrific World War II mystery/spy thriller. If you're seeking something more contemporary, my Emmeline Kirby/Gregory Longdon mystery series features a journalist and a jewel thief. The books are "Lead Me Into Danger"; "Deadly Legacy"; "From Beyond The Grave"; "A Checkered Past"; and "When Blood Runs Cold."

  6. If summer reading should be "fast" reading, then I'd like to humbly recommend my novel Last Gasp. The pages turn, or so I've heard many times from readers. When I first started writing Last Gasp, I thought that its plot might be a little far-fetched, but I don't think so any more, given today's national politics.

  7. I don't really read any differently in summer or winter. And I don't write differently either. It's just whatever strikes me. Of course, this summer I recommend reading The Blues Don't Care, by Paul D. Marks ;-) .

  11. Jacqueline, I am currently enjoying Blood Money. The amateur sleuth in my cozy mystery series is also a librarian, so I was especially interested in your book. Nina Foster has had two adventures so far, Murder Between the Pages and Secrets to Die For. Deadly Reunion is up next.
