The holidays are a great time to gift friends,
family or you yourself with books to read. With people going on vacation, many
individuals enjoy relaxing with a good book. And there certainly are a lot of
them being published! You can find books to suit every age and taste whether
fiction or nonfiction. Let’s share recommendations, whether it be your own work
or that of others.
I have just finished reading a wonderful new collection
of short stories entitled TO THE CITY, WITH LOVE by Steve Slavin. Usually short
story collections are limited in size and scope. However, this compendium is
well worth its price. It’s a very large collection divided into six parts and
literary in nature. Many of the stories are character studies of the people who
live and work in New York City . There
is also much humor here as well as sensibility. The book is available both in
print and as an ebook from all book sellers.
In
addition, I’m going to recommend my own most recent book THE INHERITANCE, a
romantic mystery with cozy elements from Intrigue Publishing.
There are
also several recent publications that provide great holiday reads.
SHERLOCK
HOLMES MYSTERY MAGAZINE #21 published another of my stories, “Spirit of the Law,”
which follows a young attorney and his graduate student assistant in solving a
murder case:
These
characters originally appear in my novella “Letter of the Law” for issue #19.
I have a short story in the new anthology BREWED AWAKENINGS 2
from Caffeinated Press. My literary
crime story is entitled “Our Neighbors Ourselves” and is one of twelve stories.
The holiday issue of NEW ZENITH MAGAZINE, available
in both print and digital editions, is chock full of interesting articles for
writers as well as holiday fiction which includes one of my new short stories.
Here’s how they describe
themselves: “New Zenith Magazine is a quarterly short fiction, poetry, and visual art
magazine. Within its pages you will find short stories of all genres, flash
fiction, memorizing poetry, hilarious cartoons/comics, photography,
illustrations, inspiring author interviews, articles on the topic of writing,
provocative writing prompts and more.”
Finally, my holiday reading gift to you is my
latest mystery short story in OVER MY DEAD BODY! Entitled “Genesis,” the story is a free read online at:
Here is another
gift for readers:
The editor of Mystery Weekly has provided a free
version of one of my short stories:
Okay, now here’s your opportunity to share the
books and publications you think will make for good holiday reading. Feel free
to mention work you’ve recently had published if you’re an author. Readers,
please mention books you have on your wish list and/or recently read and
enjoyed.
Comments/suggestions are welcome here to share.
Books always make the best gifts and yours look wonderful, Jacquie!

Hi Pamela,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the publication of your new holiday book!
I've read so many good books this year but one stands out in my mind - and I'd like to recommend it - The Inheritance, your book, Jacquie. Loved it!
ReplyDeletePatricia,
DeleteThank you so much for the endorsement! Your mysteries are also great reads any time of the year.
I just finished a YA fantasy by Richelle Mead, Soundless: http://www.richellemead.com/books/soundless-tr
ReplyDeleteYou also might look into my own latest novel, a sci fi novel, Rob's Rebellion:

Margaret,
DeleteThey both look like good reads, and I also write and read YA fiction. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks for the opportunity to do a little self-promo. My Overton Trilogy, including new release Book#3 NOBODY KNOWS available at all on-line book stores. Great holiday gift! Here's link to Book #1 A RED, RED ROSE:http://a.co/eYiXMw0
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
DeleteSince I've read these novels and much enjoyed them, these are books I recommend to other readers.
So true.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Brenda.
DeleteI'm reminded of how prolific you are, Jacquie. I've enjoyed your books and stories over the years. I have two new books out this year that I hope people will give as gifts, after reading them, of course. When Krishna Calls is the fourth Anita Ray mystery, and Come About for Murder is the seventh Mellingham mystery. Thanks for giving me a chance to talk about my books as well as yours.
ReplyDeleteSusan,
DeleteThanks for stopping by. I really enjoyed reading When Krishna Calls. I gave it to a friend to enjoy as well.
May I suggest the first book in my Jesse Damon Crime Novel series, Steeled for Murder, as a Christmas gift for mystery readers? It takes place over Christmas week, and while not your usual "Happy ever after" ending, it's upbeat and hopeful.
ReplyDeleteKM,
ReplyDeleteThanks for making the suggestion. The novel sounds like a great choice for the holidays.
I remember when everyone subscribed to magazines. I love receiving Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine in the mail, and recently subscribed to Mystery Scene - both good choices for mystery authors and readers. I got a subscription to Colorado Outdoors for my son-in-law. Physical magazines may be old school, but they're like getting a little present when you open the mailbox! (And of course I'd recommend my own Rock Shop Mystery series.)
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine,
ReplyDeleteI recommend your mystery series as well. As to magazines, my husband and I still subscribe to print magazines as well as newspapers and will continue to support them.
Congrats on your release! It looks like a good read to keep one warm during this colder months. I've been mostly playing catch-up with older fantasy novels, so I don't think any of my suggestions would quite fit your bill. ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Loni,
ReplyDeleteYour suggestions are welcome!
I have a couple of books to recommend: Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng (2014) is my favorite read of this year (literary mystery, I guess). And Shannon Baker's debut of her new mystery series, Stripped Bare, is excellent.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recommendations, Patricia. I'm not familiar with these authors but will look for their novels now that you've suggested them.
DeleteThanks for these interesting suggestions, Jacqueline. When it comes to books as gifts I do my best to buy hardcovers. I just bought Jamie Oliver's Christmas Recipe Book, and it is wonderful. A great gift! Happy holidays. xx
ReplyDeleteAnni,
DeleteThanks for your recommendation.
Thank you for this opportunity. Readers may enjoy my short mystery / romance novel Carmen's Roses, the first story in a trilogy set in New Zealand and the UK.
ReplyDeleteJennifer,
DeleteThanks for commenting. New Zealand is a fascinating place. Congrats on your trilogy.
